About
Our exciting, modern, youth-focused program encourages young people to develop at their own pace by leading, assisting and participating in a broad range of activities and adventures designed to spark their curiosity and inspire growth.
School aged children can join their local Scout Group from the age of 5 and enjoy a journey of up to 20 years progressing through the different Sections of Scouting. Or, they can join the adventure at any point of the way!
Each Section has its own age-appropriate activities and events that give children and young people the opportunity to have fun, make new friends, learn by doing and challenge themselves to do their best.
As youth members progress through the Sections, they become more involved in making decisions and take charge of their own expeditions, using the knowledge and skills they have built over their Scouting experience.
Regardless of who they are, and whatever their physical ability, Scouts gives young people the opportunity to discover their ‘thing’ – from abseiling and camping, to diving and flying, to science and coding, to craft and performing arts, there’s an adventure out there waiting for each of our young people. And Scouts is here to help them find it.
Sounds like fun? It is. But don’t just take our word for it. Give your child the chance to experience it for themselves.
JOEY SCOUTS
Joey Scouts is for boys and girls aged 5–8. It focuses on fun and friendship and is a gentle introduction to a world of adventures through Scouting.
A young person can join the Joey Section at any time after their 5th birthday provided they are attending school full time.
Joey Scouts are encouraged to discover adventure by expressing themselves creatively, using broad imagination and play through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings and singing songs together, all Joey Scouts develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them. They also begin to develop outdoor skills, learning how to recognise native birds and animals and foster an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment.
Making new friends and building social skills are very important for Joey Scouts. For some, belonging to Joey Scouts provides an opportunity to mix with a new group of people, developing their confidence and ability to make new friends. Joey Scout families are welcome to get involved too! There’s lots of opportunities for the whole family to make new friends and feel part of the community.
A trained Joey Scout Leader guides a Joey Unit of up to 20 boys and girls as they learn to share and care for each other in a social environment. The safety of all Joey Scouts is very important, which is why there are always leaders on hand during all activities.
CUB SCOUTS
Cub Scouts is for boys and girls aged 8–11. It focuses on exploring the outdoors, setting challenges and encountering new experiences!
Cub Scouts are always having adventures. They are introduced to traditional Scouting skills such as tying knots and using a map and compass and develop their confidence in their outdoor skills by taking part in adventures such as camping, rock climbing, abseiling, bushwalking, canoeing, billy-karting and even flying!
Cub Scouts also learn valuable life skills such as leadership and taking responsibility for themselves. With the support of their Cub Scout Leader, they are given opportunities to set their own challenges and lead some activities.
Cub Scouts are encouraged to talk about what’s important to them and are taught the value of citizenship and how to give back to their local communities.
SCOUTS
Scouts is for boys and girls aged 11–14 years. Here, young people develop more complex outdoor skills in a modern, fun and active environment.
As young people work their way through the Sections on the Scouting journey, they’re gradually given more responsibility for themselves and others. Scouts gives young people the confidence to put their Scouting adventures in their own hands by leading their own expeditions. From overnight hikes and camping expeditions, to getting out on the water in a kayak, canoe or sailboat, or even going up in a plane on a visit to the Air Activity Centre, Scouts plan, do and review activities that are targeted to their own special interests.
These activities often demanding a greater level of risk management, giving young people endless opportunities to practice self-sufficiency. Scouts plan their own activities, including cost and transport arrangements, helping them develop their sense of responsibility, independence and problem-solving skills!
Scouting is youth-led and adult-supported, so life as a Scout is always full of excitement!
VENTURER SCOUTS
Venturer Scouts is for young people aged 14–17 years. It is a do-it-yourself mix of fun, adventure and serving the community that encourages young people to take on bigger challenges, broaden their perspectives and push their potential.
As a Venturer Scout, you’ll have the space to have fun learning and developing your own character at your own pace. You’ll have a supportive environment for you to develop your ideals, and can discuss moral and social issues including religion, spirituality, gender and relationships.
Venturer Scouts also gives you the opportunity to make new friends and share adventures with them, while picking up life skills along the way. You may find yourself enjoying interstate, national and even international travel experiences, exploring wilderness Australia, camping above the snowline or diving on coral reefs. You could be abseiling into a limestone cave or climbing a sheer rock face. There are even opportunities to learn how to fly a plane! It’s all about healthy risk-taking and specialising in areas you’re passionate about.
Whatever your challenge, there will be trained and highly experienced adults to guide you through the experience, to teach you the necessary skills and safety techniques. You can even gain accredited skills yourself, which are recognised across Australia!
